Mr. Stinson has been a Martial Artist for over 23 years and is a 5th Degree Black Belt in Karate. He began his training in Galveston Tx with Master John Kurek as his chief instructor. Derrick grew up with rough circumstances and was able to navigate and rise above these issues due to a strong mother and a dedicated karate instructor. She wanted Derrick to learn how to protect himself so she allowed him to enter the KSK program. Since that day, he has not only learned how to defend himself, but he has learned many lessons through the martial arts which he still uses today. From middle school and college, Stinson has been able to continue his involvement in the martial arts as an instructor, competitor, and mentor. Mr. Stinson’s dedication to the martial arts has assisted him in producing many Black Belt students and positively impacting children’s lives.
With a wide range of accomplishments in the martial arts community, he holds dearest to his heart the following:
Chun Kuk Do Champion, 41 Black Belt students, Instructor of the Year (2005, UFAF), being chosen to teach Chuck Norris’s twins martial arts and above all – Life Changer. He is an AOK state champion and now he is a four time Chun Kuk Do World Champion. Derrick also competed on a professional level of sport karate known as the National Blackbelt League where he was successful in winning a couple of the tournaments in weapons and in fighting.
FAVORITE THING ABOUT COACHING
Although focused on changing and saving children’s lives, Derrick has written a book for the martial arts, a journalist for a martial arts magazine, produced martial arts videos, and he continues to develop a youth program designed to minister to children from all walks of life. My favorite thing about coaching is watching a student turn a hurdle into a stepping stone to the next level in their particular journey.
